Clarity

Clarity refers to the relative presence (or absence) of blemishes and inclusions in a diamond. Blemishes are confined to the surface of a diamond. A scratch for example, would be a blemish. Inclusions on the other hand, are completely enclosed within a diamond. They may also extend into the diamond from the surface. Together, blemishes and inclusions are called clarity characteristics. Clarity characteristics not only tell how valuable a diamond is, but they also make every diamond unique. It is extremely unlikely that two diamonds will have the same clarity characteristics in the same locations.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has created a systemized method of grading diamonds according to their clarity characteristics.

GIA Clarity Grades
Flawless:  Shows no inclusions or blemishes under 10X magnification when examined by an experienced gemologist.  Extremely rare and very expensive diamond.

Internally Flawless:  Shows no inclusions under 10X magnification, but may have some minor surface blemishes. The blemishes can often be removed by repolishing the diamond.

VVS1/VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included):  Contain minute inclusions that are difficult for a skilled gemologist to identify under 10X magnification. Very rare and very beautiful diamonds.

VS1/VS2 (Very Slightly Included):  Contain minor inclusions that are difficult to identify under 10X magnification. Excellent quality diamond.

SI1/SI2 (Slightly Included):  Contain inclusions that are noticeable under 10X magnification. May contain inclusions that are visible with the unaided eye. A great value.

I1/I2/I3 (Included):  Not carried by Diamond Atrium.
